It's definitely a good sound, but still not quite "the" sound. I've experimented a little bit with using the GE-7 to "temper" the extreme treble and hiss of the AC-3 with mixed results. That's so ironic you brought up the Boss AC-3, I actually bought one of those trying to get that tone! It actually came pretty close but it seemed to introduce a lot of hiss when you turned the highs up (which was essential in getting that type of sound out of that pedal). To make matters more confusing, it seems like some of the other Signature models were using Evans pickups too, but passive ones.
The website A Tribute to the Signature Guitar Company lists the guitar he played, the Aurora, as having EMG/Fernandes active singles, but Alex himself said in an interview that he was using Evans active single coils during that time (I believe it was the Eliminator pickups). Information about Alex's setup around that time is kind of hard to come by, but I've at least found out that he was using some kind of active single coil system in those Signature guitars he was using (for those who aren't familiar, it was a brand of guitars that were designed by him and a luthier, the results of which can be seen on the A Show Of Hands video). I've pretty much got the ambience covered (Boss Dimension chorus, delay, reverb, etc.) but just not the fundamental tone itself. I've found that using a coil-splitting on my humbucker-equipped guitar, coupled with a sharp boost at 6.4k and sharp cuts at 1.6k and 3.2k with an EQ pedal get me much closer to this sound, but not quite there (Boss GE-7 can only do so much ). Some other songs - High Water, Open Secrets, The Pass, War Paint - showcase this clean tone quite a bit too. Sometimes, like on "Scars", it barely sounds like a guitar at all, almost sounds like some exotic, electronic Chinese zither! (Ditto for "Tai Shan" off Hold Your Fire) He also uses pretty much the same tone on "Show Don't Tell," but only the album version from Presto, as the live versions later on are much more traditional clean tones as his rig changed. There is one sound (or I should say, a few very similar sounds) that has been very difficult for me to nail, and that is that super-shimmery, chimey, trebly (some even say "glassy" or "airy") clean tone from the Hold Your Fire and Presto albums. (hence the username) Alex Lifeson almost single-handedly got me into guitar effects since I first saw the A Show Of Hands video back in the day, and ever since then, I've been inspired to create big, atmospheric, "spacious" guitar sounds, with chorus, reverb, delays, etc. That's where you get these main dirty sounds. Actually sounds little tighter than the Marshall in my opinion. It's called the lerxst omega and it is almost a direct copy.

And he said, we really would like have a copy of, of 2553, martial jubilee series head and they came up with this. Another guy on the crew called some buddies of his at a company called Mojo Tone in North Carolina. So we put out the clarion call across the inner webs and some of them came up and they figured out who was trying to buy them and the price got astronomical.
When they made the last record, they used a Martial Jubilee series 2553 head, and Alex really loved it. This is where Alex's tech, Scott takes care of the guitars, takes care of his amps, takes care of all the things that create the Alex lights and sound.
